The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is one of the EU's most ambitious data infrastructure initiatives. Mandated under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781), DPPs will eventually require structured, machine-readable sustainability data for most products placed on the EU market.
For e-commerce brands, the DPP intersects with EPR and PPWR obligations in important ways — and the first mandatory DPP requirements arrive in 2027.

The DPP concept is that a consumer scanning a QR code on a product should be able to access its sustainability credentials — material composition, recycled content, repairability, end-of-life instructions — without needing to rely on voluntary brand claims.
DPPs are mandated under ESPR, which entered into force in July 2024. ESPR requires the Commission to adopt product-specific delegated acts specifying DPP requirements for different product categories. The rollout is staged:

For most DTC e-commerce brands selling textiles or electronics, the 2027 date is the immediate planning horizon.
The specific data requirements depend on the product category's delegated act. But ESPR Article 4 and Annex I establish the general framework of what a DPP must be capable of carrying:

DPPs and EPR/PPWR are separate regulatory frameworks, but they share data requirements in important ways:
Packaging material data: PPWR's Annex VIII technical documentation requires packaging material composition and recyclability information. The DPP for a product will also need to reference packaging sustainability information (end-of-life handling of packaging). A well-structured PPWR technical file significantly reduces the effort needed to populate DPP packaging-related fields.
Recycled content: Both PPWR (for packaging) and ESPR/DPP (for the product itself) require recycled content information. If you're already tracking recycled content in packaging for PPWR purposes, extending this to product recycled content for DPP is a natural data extension.
Substance compliance: PPWR prohibits certain substances (PFAS) in packaging, and requires documentation. ESPR requires information on substances of concern in the product for the DPP. Building a unified substance management data system across both product and packaging reduces duplication.
Supply chain data: Both frameworks require supplier documentation. The DPP effectively requires a formalised supply chain data flow — traceability of material origins and certifications — that is deeper than what EPR alone requires, but EPR forces you to build supplier relationships and data flows that DPPs can leverage.
The convergence point: As both PPWR and DPPs mature, the underlying data infrastructure — supplier material declarations, recycled content certifications, recyclability assessments — becomes shared. Brands that build unified product and packaging sustainability data systems will manage both frameworks more efficiently than those treating them as separate compliance exercises.
1. Map your supply chain for fibre composition traceability. DPP requires country of origin per production stage. Many apparel brands have this for Tier 1 (cut and sew) but not Tier 2 (fabric) or Tier 3 (yarn/fibre). Start requesting this data from suppliers now — it takes 12–18 months to get reliable multi-tier supply chain data.
2. Standardise material declarations. Every supplier relationship needs a formal material composition declaration tied to specific order batches, not just general product certificates. Invest in supplier onboarding for this requirement.
3. Evaluate DPP technology options. Several technology vendors already offer DPP infrastructure:
The EU's technical standards (via CEN/CENELEC) for DPP data carriers and interoperability are still being finalised. Avoid investing heavily in proprietary systems that may not conform to the final standard.
4. Align internal product data management. DPP requires a "single source of truth" for product data across design, production, and compliance teams. Many brands have this data fragmented across PLM systems, supplier portals, compliance spreadsheets, and ERP. A DPP forces consolidation.
1. Prepare repairability data. ESPR delegated acts for electronics are expected to include repairability scores and spare parts availability — data that electronics brands must make accessible. Review right-to-repair requirements in parallel (ESPR and EU right-to-repair directive).
2. Substance data: Electronics have complex substance considerations (RoHS, REACH). DPP data requirements will leverage existing substance compliance documentation; ensure your RoHS and REACH data is product-level (not just category-level) and accessible.

2. Build DPP-ready data infrastructure now. The specific data fields will differ by product type, but the underlying requirement — structured digital product data linked to a product identifier — is consistent. Brands investing in product information management (PIM) systems now will be well-positioned regardless of which product categories are mandated first.
Beyond compliance, forward-thinking brands are treating DPPs as consumer engagement tools. A QR code on packaging that reveals:
...is a powerful differentiator in a consumer environment increasingly sceptical of vague sustainability claims. The DPP effectively converts verified sustainability data into a consumer-facing credential.
Brands that invest in DPP infrastructure ahead of deadlines and use it for consumer communication are likely to see brand affinity benefits, particularly with younger consumers and in markets (Germany, Netherlands, Nordics) where sustainability credentials actively drive purchasing decisions.
